Do You
Have a Passion for Writing?
As many of
you know, Centerpoint has been around since 1992… no small feat for a non-profit
organization. There are many things that have kept us going, including having a
clear vision and the energy and passion to grow that vision. (We do live what
we teach! J) There is another thing that, I
believe, has allowed us to stay in business for that many years when other
organizations have closed their doors. One of our facilitators describes it
this way: she says that Centerpoint’s first name is “change” and our middle
name is “flexibility!”
If you’ve
ever experienced our services, you’ll know that Centerpoint is all about
navigating change and about continual growth. We like to think of ourselves as
an agile organization that can adapt and adjust to the changing needs of the
community. To help us plot a course through our upcoming changes, the Board of Directors
has invited 20 amazing people to a session this Friday to give us their
insights, expertise, and advice about how Centerpoint can make the leap from a
small non-profit to one that has a greater capacity to reach out to the
community we serve. We’ll be answering the question: What
does Centerpoint need to do/be in order to build on what we’ve already
accomplished and create a viable and sustainable future?
This is very exciting
and, as what often happens when things change, uncertain. Who knows what kind
of challenges this group will ask of us? Please send us your positive and
creative thoughts this Friday afternoon! If you find that you have any ideas or
inspirations that could be helpful to Centerpoint, I’d love to hear from you.
I’ll look forward to
letting you know what transpired and what we learned in next month’s connecting
point e-newsnote!
Until then…
I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

October, wow – can you believe it’s
October already? – and it’s half way over at that! I
love this month; it reminds me of change and boy do I really love change.
Recently I’ve been switching around the office, re-doing the work room,
organizing, un-organizing, doing, re-doing…it never gets old to me. I go home
and spend my time doing nearly the same thing there. I moved in to my house at
the end of August and I’ve already re-arranged my room. This weekend I re-did
the kitchen, this week I’m working on the hall closet (trust me it’s quite the
project!) and this weekend…well, we’ll just have to wait and see what it
brings. The feeling really is quite fulfilling. I can start the project – and
if my energy enables it, I can also finish that same project and begin another
with its end.
As the leaves turn I feel myself
turning, maybe in preparation for the new season – I’m not really sure. It’s just
another one of the many transitional, changing times I think we go through in
life. The thing I love so much about Centerpoint is the fact that we embrace
those changes and transitions here. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever been taught
yet we all go through it so frequently. So, I guess the take home lesson of the
day is this: embrace your changes and transitions just as you embrace the new
golden season.

Advanced Education Fair
There is no
single location where people interested in an advanced degree can go to find
out all the local offerings and speak to representatives from colleges and
universities. Many people in the area
are finding that they need that extra degree to compete in the workplace, but
don’t know where to start. This event is designed for them - to allow them to
interact with educators, get a true feeling about the programs as well as the
people.
The Details
When: January 16, 2007, 3-8pm
Where:
Who will be there: Local, regional and
national colleges and universities
Who will attend:
What
will happen: There will be a combination of panels,
workshops and speakers along with the Universities present. We anticipate panels on practical matters
such as “How to Fit an Advanced Degree into your Life”, “How to Finance the
Degree” and some inspirational subjects based on personal success stories.
Carol Vecchio of Centerpoint will provide a workshop on Career Change, and they
are working on a keynote speaker for the event as well.
Stay tuned
for more info!
On September 28th Centerpoint held a career forum
in Environmental Careers. We had a variety of environmental careers represented
by our panelists. The forum illustrated the fact that many different kinds of
skills are needed for environmental management-personal and management skills
as well as technical skills. Environmental careers cover a wide spectrum. The
forum turned out well and was very informative. Many thanks to our panelists
Jon Shields, Joy St. Germain, and Karen Price and
also to Brenda Regan from Human Resources of Washington State. If you were
unable to attend, you can check out the video from Centerpoint. If you want to
learn more about carer opportunities in a field, you
could volunteer with Centerpoint to put together a forum. Our forums are
organized by Centerpoint and its volunteers. I put this forum together with
LOTS of help from Centerpoint and Roxanne, another volunteer. It was fun!
